give job shop "stainless" reputation Impulse Mfg Inc, Cumming, GA, calls itself "a true one-stop shop for all our customers' components." Impulse runs about half its work in various grades of stainless for its primary customers in the food, poultry, bottling, and cryogenic industries. It also makes parts used in electrical power systems, sheet metal cabinetry and boxes, as well as tube and frame construction of many types. For the first ten years of the business, conventional machine tools did all the work and did it well, according to Impulse president Ron Baysden. But then the company purchased a high-pressure, gas-assist CO2 laser from Mitsubishi Laser Div, MC Machinery Systems Inc, Wood Dale, IL. Another laser followed with a dual pallet shuttle and workpiece lifter from Mitsubishi. The investments were wise decisions for Impulse because it expanded its base while providing improved services to existing customers. Mr. Baysden reports Impulse now produces numerous parts which formerly would have been "no quote" situations. "The lasers' accuracy and edges are well within 0.005´´. Plus, the savings in tooling, productivity, and turnaround times slam-dunked our own conventional machine tools for basic home making and contour shapes. Material yield is a major cost factor with stainless and our lasers reduce the web and punch-out areas to an almost negligible amount compared to turret presses," says Mr. Baysden. Tolerances on the lasers range from gross to ±0.001´´ with ±0.005´´ on flat patterns. Sheet metal tolerances run from 0.005´´ to 0.020´´ per the customer needs.
